Avoid Hysteria. Track Swine Flu with Savvy Search Tools.
*****************************************************

Concerned about the swine flu epidemic? Who wouldn't be! But watching 24-hour cable news can lead one to the edge of depression, or over the cliff into panic or pandemonium with the wall-to-wall coverage, Here’s a look at some of the more direct and objective sources of online information about swine, avian and pandemic flu.

PandemicFlu.gov <http://www.pandemicflu.gov/index.html> is a comprehensive resource of U.S. government information being compiled about the outbreak. Here you can find news, FAQs, information on how to plan and prepare should things worsen, status reports from countries where the flu has been diagnosed and more.

Google has added an Experimental Flu Trends for Mexico page <http://www.google.org/flutrends/intl/en_mx/index.html> that uses aggregated search data to track queries likely to be associated with influenza-like illness

How about within the US? TechCrunch has done a nice look <http://www.techcrunch.com/2009/04/29/searching-for-the-swine-flu/> using Google Trends to spot where the most people are searching for swine flu information. Texas leads the list, followed by Vermont, Kansas, New Mexico and New York. TechCrunch also points at some maps based off of Facebook discussions.

Perhaps the most comprehensive map <http://maps.google.com/maps/ms?ie=UTF8&hl=en&t=p&msa=0&msid=106484775090296685271.0004681a37b713f6b5950&ll=32.639375,-110.390625&spn=15.738151,25.488281&source=embed> has been created by virus expert Dr. Henry Niman, showing both confirmed and suspected cases of swine flu in individual humans, worldwide. The map uses markers to show confirmed or probable cases in specific locations; markers with no dots in them are confirmed fatalities.

Another good map of the swine flu cases is offered by HealthMap <http://healthmap.org/swineflu>, which integrates outbreak data of varying reliability, ranging from news sources (such as Google News) to curated personal accounts (such as ProMED) to validated official alerts (such as World Health Organization).

Live Search Maps has put together a 2009 Swine Flu H1N1 Outbreak and Migration Map <http://maps.live.com/?v=2&encType=1&cid=F4ACB81BC72A2139!112>. This shows both reported cases of the flu, and the paths that infected people took from one country to another, spreading the disease.

Google Personal Profile Search Wants You!
***************************************

Last week, Google began showing Personal Profiles at the bottom of U.S. search results. Needless to say, this caused quite a stir in the search marketing industry. Is this the start of Google reputation management? What about doctors, dentists, photographers or lawyers (among a great many others) whose name is also their personal or business brand? Is Google trading search superiority for your mortal soul?

A Google Personal Profile result not only sports a brief intro for the top four names displayed, but also contains links to view the full result set for your query. With links to searches on MySpace, Facebook, Classmates and LinkedIn.

If you haven't created your Google Personal Profile yet, step on it! The first step is to simply search for "me" in Google and the first result will take you to the first step in setting up your profile.

You can add quite a bit of information, here's a quick list of items you can fill out:

* First and Last Name
* Nickname
* Other Names
* Location Information
* Work Information
* Education Information
* Short Bio
* Links
* Profile URL
* Photo
* Contact Information

Do you have to fill out all the fields? Negatory. There are no hard-and-fast rules, especially since the system’s ranking criteria are likely to change over time. But for now, those who at least fill out the form with their first and last name (this is the basic requirement), along with a few links to content, will probably increase the odds of appearing.

Will Microsoft Launch Kumo June 2nd at SMX Advanced in Seattle?
************************************************************

Microsoft has put up a clock on the Redmond campus with a 40-day countdown to the launch of its next generation search engine, code named Kumo. The countdown ends June 2nd, the same date the Search Marketing Expo Advanced conference gets underway at Seattle's Bell Harbor International Conference Center. Yours truly will be presenting at the symposium which is being keynoted by Dr. Qi Lu, Microsoft's President of Online Services.

What will be new with Kumo? While little specificity is known, Microsoft plans to "make results human-readable," "reduce clickbacks," and focus on people's "key tasks" like travel or hyper-local results. As far as the much ballyhooed real time search feature that has the Twitter world agog, Kumo will not have it, at least for now.

Google Analytics Adds AdSense Integration

1. Log in to AdSense
2. Click the link that says “Integrate your AdSense account with Google Analytics” on the Reports > Overview tab
3. Follow the on-screen instructions

Here's a video demo to walk you through it.

Measuring Up In a Downturn
***********************************

"With the right approach and resources, a downturn can actually provide real opportunities for a savvy marketer," says Google. To make their case, Google has compiled a list of recommended strategies and tools that can help you reveal search marketing opportunities and move closer to your marketing goals. What's more, many of these tools are free, so they can also help you do more with less.

Find inspiration and links at Google's "Do more with Less" page:

Phishing Attack Underway At Facebook -- Don't Sign In To Fbaction.net
*****************************************************************

TechCrunch has received multiple tips of a new phishing attack that has broken out on Facebook. If you get an email message that looks to be from Facebook with the subject, “Hello”, don't bother clicking on the link included.

The message body will apparently read something like this (with YOURFRIEND being replaced by the name of a friend of yours):

YOURFRIEND sent you a message.

Subject: Hello

“Visit http://www.facebook.com/l/4253f;http://fbaction.net/”

Update: It looks like “fbaction.net” is now the #2 hot trending search topic for all of Google Trends. This thing is apparently spreading quick.

SEO Organic Search Tip of the Week: Optimizing Your Sitemap
*********************************************************

The Sitemap on your Website (not to be confused with the Sitemap.xml file you may have uploaded to Google Webmaser Central and other search engines) is a linkable Table of Contents to the key signpost pages on your domain. For that reason, Sitemaps can be valuable tools for pointing strong internal links at various pages of your site. This is important because internal linking is a key factor in ranking algorithms. And the double-duty sitemap is beneficial for both SEO and users, so giving your Sitemap page some attention can pay off with better crawling and more internal pages ranking for your long-tail terms.

Here's how to optimize the on-site Sitemap:

* Have the link to each page use the main keyword phrase you've placed on the page you're linking to. Better still, wrap a bit of descriptive text around that link. A page with links and text is more powerful than just a list of links, and the text can help the users determine the true content on a page that may be optimized for a general term.

* Group "Themes" Together

If you have a lot of links on your sitemap, group them together. If you just run a list of links together, can the user easily determine which pages are about your rooms, units, products, or contact info?

* Don't Have to Call it a "Sitemap"

You can call your Sitemap page an "Index" or "Table of Contents" or even "Directory Assistance" to help the user figure out the purpose of the page.

* Use Follow and Nofollow Correctly

Have a followed link to your sitemap only on the home page and nofollow it on the interior pages. You can call this "sculpting" if you like. What we find is that pushing power from your home page to your sitemap and out to the rest of your site using optimized text links helps improve crawling and ranking for those deep internal pages.

* Keep it Under 100 Links Per Page

There's no law that says you can only have one sitemap page, so build more than one if you need to. Google doesn't care to see more than 100 links per page. Breaking things down by theme or category into two or three sitemaps is a better idea, and have a followed link to each one on your home page. If you do use more than one sitemap, keep them user-friendly by naming each link after your theme.
