Closing In on Microhoo? Microsoft Raises Yahoo Offer To $33; YHOO Wants $37
++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++
Microsoft leaked news yesterday that it is willing to pay $32-$33 for Yahoo -- in a renewed attempt to get Yahoo shareholders to pressure the board to sell. Yahoo's board wants "upper $30s." As at the start of this process, $34-$35 should get the deal done. The companies now appear to no more than $4 apart, so a deal suddenly seems a lot more likely.
In the meantime Microsoft Live Search is making improvements. Fist, there are newer, deeper Site Links that reveal the top search result's main areas. Additional enhancements announced this week include an expanded image search index, a new integrated mapping experience with Multimap, a location based mobile search feature called "Find Me," and more content for celebrities and books.
Celebrity Rank is a new entertainment experience within Live Search that charts celebrities and 'news-makers' by the total number of daily web searches they receive. Another new vertical, Live Search Books, provides free access to out–of-copyright content to Internet users and allows people to search online to find answers from authoritative and trusted books.

Surfing Google at See-Level and Sea Level
+++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++
A new research paper unveiling a new Google image ranking system known as “VisualRank” was presented in a paper at the International World Wide Web Conference in Beijing this past Thursday, and the process was also reported at Techcrunch.
Googlers Yushi Jing and Shumeet Baluja argue that Google is now ready to see beyond text. In their paper they talk about their efforts to apply state of the art image recognition software to figure out what stuff is in an image. “Commercial search-engines often solely rely on the text clues of the pages in which images are embedded to rank images, and often entirely ignore the content of the images themselves as a ranking signal,” they say. Their experiments in actually digging into the images themselves “show significant improvement, in terms of user satisfaction and relevancy, in comparison to the most recent Google Image Search results.”
Google is looking at the visual characteristics of popular images and then determining rank based on similarities between images. London, UK-based PIXSTA has emerged as another comparative image search challenger to Google.
Google is also diving into 3D mapping of our planet's oceans to accompany Google Earth and Google Sky. Google Ocean will contain 3D oceanographic maps with underwater topography, and allow you to use search features for spots and attractions, along with zooming and panning features. Much like Google Earth and Sky, you will be able to overlay layers on top of the oceanographic maps, such as weather patterns, currents, temperatures, shipwrecks, coral reefs, and algae blooms.

Google Analytics for Blogger now in Private Beta
+++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++
You may remember when Google acquired Measure Map, the intuitive, highly visual and usable analytics product for blogs. When the Measure Map team arrived at Google, its initial work resulted in the redesigned Google Analytics interface dubbed GA 2.0.
Since then the team has been hard at work fulfilling their original promise: to help bloggers understand the impact that their blogs are having on the world. They have rebuilt Measure Map as an integrated feature of both Google Analytics and Google's Blogger service.
Right now the product is an early beta, so we can all expect changes and hiccups along the way. But the future looks bright for more intuitive Blogger analytics. In the meantime, you can always use Google Analytics 2.0 to track your blog and benefit from Measure Map's influence.

The Strongest Directories...At Your Fingertips
++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++
Web directories come in all shapes and sizes -- horizontal, vertical, specialized and general. By enrolling your site in the most relevant and highest Pagerank-ing Web guides, you give your site an instant boost of credibility, authority and popularity.
Aviva has made it easy to locate the most desirable directories using a popular "Page Strength" indexing tool developed by SEOmoz. The reporting groups Directories with a "Page Strength" Factor of 10, 9, 8, 7, 6 and so on.
It should come as no surprise that many of the strongest directories charge a fee (which can be justified by the higher PageRank they pass to your site), but several high-value compendiums offer free listings. For example, of the two directories with a PageRank of 10, the Open Directory Project, <dmoz.org>, is free while Yahoo's meta directory, <dir.yahoo.com>, charges $299 per year.
In the PR=8 category, Best of the Web.org, <botw.org>, charges a listing fee of $79.95 per year or $239.95 lifetime, but <bubl.ac.uk> is free, and <directory.v7n.com> charges a listing fee of $49.95.
While paid links may often come under fire and get you in trouble, paid directory listings are an accepted practice. Don't shortchange yourself by missing out on these high value link building opportunities.

Test Your Web Design in Different Browsers
+++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++
Windows, Mac, Linux, IE, Firefox, Safari. What does your Website look like on various browsers and platforms?
Browsershots makes screenshots of your Web design in different browsers. Submit your Web address and it will be added to the job queue. A number of distributed computers will then open your Website in their browser. They will make screenshots and upload them to Browsershot's central server. Your photo's are ready.

Make Page Descriptions Unique or Eliminate Them
++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++
Typically, each and every Web page has a “meta-description” tag in its code. The search engines will sometimes use that description as the blurb that runs beneath the Title on the Search Engine Results Page.
If all your meta-descriptions are the same for all your site pages, or if you grab the first sentence [of your page content] or use the same meta-description on every page, your description may not be nearly as relevant as the description Google can extract from your site by matching the search terms. So if your description is the same on all your pages, you are better off removing it and letting Google auto-generate snippets. They usually will do that anyway, but anytime they don’t, your listing could stand a good chance, or a bad one, of looking less relevant than your competitors.

SEO Tip of the Week: Create A Google Video Sitemap
++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++
You've heard of the XML Sitemap? This is the signposting of your Website that helps Googlebot, Yahoo Slirp II and Microsoft's searchcrawlers locate even hard-to-find Web pages. But did you know that Google invites you to create a separate Video Sitemap using the Sitemap protocol with additional video-specific tags?
By submitting a video-specific Sitemap in addition to your standard Sitemap, you can specify all the video files on your site, along with relevant metadata.
Video content includes Web pages which embed video, URLs to players for video, or the URLs of raw video content hosted on your site. If Google cannot discover video content at the URLs you provide, those records will be ignored by Googlebot.
Each Sitemap file that you provide must have no more than 50,000 video items and must be no larger than 10MB uncompressed. An individual video file or thumbnail (specified in the <video:content_loc> and <video:thumbnail_loc> tags, respectively) can be no larger than 30MB.
