Google Friend Connect: Make Any Site Social
++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++
Google has just announced a preview release of Google Friend Connect, a service that helps Website owners grow traffic by enabling any site on the Web to easily provide social features for its visitors.
With Google Friend Connect, any Website owner can add a snippet of code to his or her site and get social features up and running immediately without programming -- picking and choosing from built-in functionality like user registration, invitations, members gallery, message posting, and reviews, as well as third-party applications built by the OpenSocial developer community.
Visitors to any site using Google Friend Connect will be able to see, invite, and interact with new friends, or, using secure authorization APIs, with existing friends from social sites on the web, including Facebook, Google Talk, hi5, orkut, Plaxo, and more.
To illustrate, independent musician Ingrid Michaelson has added music features from iLike with Google Friend Connect and is now able to run the iLike OpenSocial application on her official website (www.ingridmichaelson.com). As a result, starting tonight, fans who visit Ingrid's site can connect with their friends without having to leave the site. Visitors will be able to see comments by friends from their social networks, add music to their profiles, see who is attending concerts, and enjoy other features of the iLike application, all at Ingrid's website.
Google Friend Connect has been developed to lower two barriers to the spread of social features across the web. First, many website owners want to add features that enable their visitors to do things with their friends, but the technology and resource hurdles have been too high. Second, people are tiring of needing to create new logins and profiles and recreate their friends lists wherever they go on the web. Google Friend Connect offers a solution to both these issues.

...Follows Facebook Connect. Is Anyone Noticing A Trend Here?
+++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++
Just one business day before Google's introduction, social network Facebook announced the debut of Facebook Connect, a new technology for members to connect their profile data and authentication credentials to external Web sites.
The formal announcement was made through a post on Facebook's developer blog by senior platform manager Dave Morin. Facebook Connect will launch within the next few weeks.
Through Facebook Connect, members will be able to use their Facebook identities across the Web -- profile photos, names, photos, friends, groups, events, and other information. Facebook profile content, for example, could appear on other social sites, and Facebook event listings could theoretically connect with external event and invitation services.
Facebook will handle the authentication process, and while privacy controls have not been made clear, the company has stressed that user security will be a priority. And there's reason to believe Facebook will be particularly careful: The company already partners with outside services to share data in its Beacon advertising program, and the PR missteps surrounding Beacon's launch are something that Facebook likely does not want to repeat.
Last month, Facebook started partnering with other social sites to pull external data into Facebook's "mini-feeds," displaying user activity from the likes of Flickr and Yelp on Facebook profile pages.
No partner Web sites for Facebook Connect have been announced yet, but director of platform Ben Ling explained to CNET News.com that "there's been a lot of partner interest." One partner, however, was displayed in mockups on Facebook's developer blog: social news site Digg.

What is a #1 Google Ranking Worth?
++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++
In August of 2006 AOL leaked millions of search records. Some SEOs scoured through this data to look at click data by ranking. A comment on Jim Boykin's blog reveals the percent of clicks for each position for 9,038,794 searches and 4,926,623 clicks. Donna Fontenot shared the relative click volume of lower ranked results relative to the top ranked site.
Overall Percent of Clicks and Relative Click Volume
1. 42.13%, 2,075,765 clicks
2. 11.90%, 586,100 clicks 2. 3.5x less
3. 8.50%, 418,643 clicks 3. 4.9x less
4. 6.06%, 298,532 clicks 4. 6.8x less
5. 4.92%, 242,169 clicks 5. 8.5x less
6. 4.05%, 199,541 clicks 6. 10.4x less
7. 3.41%, 168,080 clicks
8. 3.01%, 148,489 clicks
9. 2.85%, 140,356 clicks
10. 2.99%, 147,551 clicks
Based on this data, if you are ranking 8, 9, or 10 you may be able to increase your traffic for that keyword 1,400% by ranking #1. Even jumping from #8 to #3 can triple your traffic.

YouTube Unveils Buzz Targeting
+++++++++++++++++++++++++++
Wouldn’t it be swell if you could look into a crystal ball and figure out which YouTube videos were going to “go viral” so you could drop in an ad for the best ROI ever? YouTube claims it has cracked the code between video and viral.
It’s called Buzz Targeting and Google’s CEO Eric Schmidt started the buzz last month in an interview with CNBC in which he said, “We believe the best [YouTube] products are coming out this year. And they’re new products … much more participative, much more creative…much more interesting in and of themselves.”
In a released statement, YouTube said its product and engineering team created “an algorithm that determines which YouTube partner videos are quickly becoming popular on the site and about to go viral. The algorithm looks at several factors, such as acceleration of views, favorites, and ratings activity, and then allows advertisers to target their ads specifically to these videos on YouTube.”
Lionsgate was the first advertiser to partner with YouTube in the pilot of this product, by using buzz targeting to promote the release of the film "The Forbidden Kingdom."

Web Printouts -- A New Ad Medium
+++++++++++++++++++++++++++++
Enter the "PrinterStitial." Combining the "advantages of online ads with the power of traditional print ads, Denver-based startup Format Dynamics sees a new ad opportunity in the estimated 61 billion pages of Web content printed out by users each year.
When consumers make printouts from Web pages enabled with Format Dynamics' "CleanPrint," the technology dynamically reformats the pages to be more appealing to both consumers and advertisers--including text, photos, charts and ads--while completely eliminating such Web-centric features as navigation bars. The PrinterStitials can either be print-friendly versions of ads already on the Web page or completely separate "print ads."
Depending on the online publisher, PrinterStitials are either sold by the sites themselves or by Format Dynamics. The company has also developed a companion analytical tool, PrintTracker, which measures all printing of PrinterStitial ads directly from browsers, providing publishers and advertisers with data and metrics on printing behavior.

Get Link backs for Hijacked Pics
++++++++++++++++++++++++++++
Tired of people hotlinking your images, and with it, your bandwidth? There are several ways of dealing with this issue, but one of the best is a new widget script that gets the image bandits to give you a backlink. Why, you can practically encourage other Websites to use your images now (hint, hint).
LinkMyPics is subtitled The Hotlink Advantage Maximizer. By using this script on the images you want to protect, it produces a helpful bit of code that hotlinkers can use to link to your image - this code pops up when the hotlinker right-clicks on your pics. There may be some who will still strip the backlink out of the code, but a goodly number will use the code “as is."
Right click on the image on on the demo page to see how it works.,

SEO Tip of the Week: You, (Yes You!), Need An Online Press Kit
+++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++
If you publish a Website with a unique product, service or value proposition, you are the master of your domain. I'm not talking about domain names, burt rather expertise. Positioning your company, your CEO, or another key staffer as niche experts is vital for both PR and 'Search Engine Positioning" (SEP). An important of that positioning is an Online Press Kit.
Sometimes called a Media Kt, an Online Press kit is essentially an expanded “About Me” section that includes other components and facet sheets: things like images and graphics (headshots of yourself or images of your product, facilities, or ebook covers), more in-depth background information about yourself that journalists can draw on when writing about you, or quoting you, and other pages or sections that highlight quotes, testimonials, syndicated articles, suggested questions, plus podcasts and videos, images and graphics. The more information you impart, the better.
Just by having your own online press kit, you let the media know that you have established credentials and are available as a source. That gives you an edge over all the other “authorities” who don’t have an online press kit.
Your first press release could be to announce the Online Press Kit itself. You can also contact editors of relevant newspapers and trade journals, or your local news editors, and let them know that you are available in the future as an authority on your special subject. You can also register as an expert source at either ProfNet (a service of PRWeb) or ExpertClick. These services connect journalists with expert sources (such as yourself), so they are great places to network, but the services can get a but pricey. A good place to start is doing everything you can in the first few months to build up your name recognition and have everything in place to position yourself as an authority.
