Searching For Cheap Gas?! Optimize Your PPG (Price per Gallon)
++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++
Is there such a thing as an Eco-Optimizer? As the price of gasoline speeds toward $5.00, every savvy searcher owes it to their fellow Netizens to help optimize their petrol purchases. Starting with where to search to find the best prices.
GasBuddy is a long-standing resource for checking on gas prices. A color-coded map displays which US state has the lowest prices (right now, Missouri at $3.83) or the cheapest US city (Wichita at $3.75). Enter a city, state or ZIP code in the Search box for your local information.
MSN Autos is annoying that unless you enter a ZIP code to start, you see a blank page. Still, once you do, you can see stations pinpointed in the area.
Motor Trend does it by list - not by map, just pick by state link or enter a ZIP.
Enter a zip code at GasPriceWatch and get a more map-driven bird's eye view. MapQuest Gas Prices displays the lowest prices across the US. A link at the top also shows the highest (Spring Valley, NY is $5.16).
Alt Fuel Prices covers alternative fuel prices. If it's not gasoline you want, check out this map-based resource.

McCain vs. Obama - The Websites
++++++++++++++++++++++++++++
Now that the presumptive U.S. presidential nominees are presumpted, (okay, presumed), it's time to compare the candidates according to, what else, their Websites!
In Search Engine Land testing this week, John McCain's home page layout broke when Javascript was disabled. McCain's menus also failed, which probably did not help the search rankings of his inner pages, when scripting was turned off. This is based on a Firefox browser with the NoScript add-on activated for the sake of security, and to help identify usability problems.
Barack Obama's Webmaster seems to have done better. Obama's home page is fully functional with scripts disabled. Even the pop up menus work, because they're driven by CSS. Keep in mind, only about 2% of desktop users browse the web with scripts disabled, but these users often have a larger than average voice on the Internet. For instance, Googlebot ignores most scripts.
Let's hope the electoral college is more decisive than 2%. Who remembers dimpled chads?

Googlers In Space: Google Founder Brin to Visit Space Station
++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++
Yes, we're on a cultural news kick this week. In another People pages piece, a Googler is about to go where no bot has gone before. Co-Founder Segrey Brin has been booked to visit the International Space Station in 2011. One of two seats available for the first private space flight to the International Space Station has been reserved for Brin.
Google said the seats were "offered to not only individual explorers but also to businesses, organizations, and institutions." The deal was brokered with the Russian space agency. It might be worthwhile noting that Sergey Brin is Russian-born.

Google "Skip Intro" Link Skips You Past Splash Pages
+++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++
Are the days of elaborate Flash intro pages numbered?
If you've clicked through to a company's web site from a Google search only to be force-fed a minute-long Flash intro video before you get to the actual content, Google's taken a step to make your life better by adding Skip intro links to results for web sites with intro videos. Handy.
To see an example, visit the link below and look for the [Skip Intro] link at the end of the first search result's title.

A New AdWords Editor 6.0
+++++++++++++++++++++++
Google has announced the release of a new AdWords Editor, version 6.0, for both Mac and Windows.
New features include the following:
* Export statistics to CSV: You can now export a CSV file that includes performance statistics. First download the statistics, then go to the File menu > Export to CSV.
* Update minimum CPC bids: To refresh the minimum CPC bids for your keywords, click 'Get Recent Changes > Include Min. CPC Bids.' Note that this option takes more time than the basic 'Get Recent Changes' option.
* Improved stats download: When you select an interval with 'Choose Stats Interval,' AdWords Editor downloads fresh statistics and displays a progress bar during download.
* Spell check: Check the spelling of text fields (such as keywords and ad text) by right-clicking the field and selecting 'Spell check this field' in the right-click menu. Available for English, French, Italian, German, Spanish, Brazilian Portuguese, and Dutch.
* Append text: Add text before or after existing text in a specific column, for all selected rows. Select the rows you want to edit, then click the 'Append text' link at the bottom of the edit pane. For example, add the word 'New' at the beginning of the headlines in your selected text ads. Learn more about this tool.
* Drag and drop: Now you can drag and drop ad groups within the tree view. To move an ad group, select it in the tree view and drag it to another campaign. To copy an ad group, select it and drag it while holding the Control key.
* Use formula words in the Replace Text tool: Review these instructions before using this advanced feature.
* CPC placement targeting: Create a new CPC placement-targeted campaign or edit your CPC bids for placements. Placement CPC campaigns are labeled [Placement CPC] in the tree view.
* Conversion Optimizer campaigns: You can download Conversion Optimizer campaigns and edit their contents (keywords, bids, ads, and ad groups). However, it isn't possible to enable or disable the Conversion Optimizer in AdWords Editor. Learn more about support for bidding options in AdWords Editor.
* Ad group negative sites: Add and update negative sites at the ad group level.
* Select duplicate keywords: After running Find Duplicate Keywords, you can now quickly select all the duplicates that meet certain criteria. Click 'Select duplicates by' in the tab tool bar and choose one of the menu options. For example, select all the duplicates with the lowest CTR, then edit or delete them as needed.
* Sorting duplicate keywords: Now when you sort duplicate keywords, the groupings are preserved. AdWords Editor sorts within each group, and also sorts the groups themselves.
* Diagnostic logs: Diagnostic logging is a troubleshooting mode. When enabled, it creates reports that can help our engineers better understand technical issues you may encounter. Go to the Tools menu > Settings.
* Show posting progress: When this option is enabled, AdWords Editor displays a progress bar when you post changes. You can also disable this option to help decrease the time it takes to post your changes. Go to the Tools menu > Settings.

It's All in the Backlinks
+++++++++++++++++++++
Exploration of your competitors' backlinks can give you an excellent idea of your competition's link building strategy and help you with keyword research, copy theming and strategic partnering, among other things.
BacklinkWatch is a bit stuffed with advertisements and slow but it’s free but it will take time visiting each page linking to your site and find the anchor text.
Smart Backlinks tool offers a handy FireFox extension and viewing options (anchor text on/off; nofollow on/off) speeding up the checking process.
Analyze Back Links is a very new but promising tool also allowing for a number of useful settings (anchor text being one of them). Some figures however (total backlinks, for examples) seems inaccurate (or I didn’t understand what they stand for).
Link Diagnosis takes a lot of time but offers the widest variety of sorting options (anchor text is one of them) enabling you to quickly find any page you need.

What Can You Do if your Website has the Wrong Sitelinks?
+++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++
Google automatically chooses the Sitelinks for your website. Unfortunately, Google's algorithms aren't perfect and sometimes Google assigns the wrong Sitelinks to a website.
Sometimes, Google can display Sitelinks that go to dead pages or Sitelinks to web pages that you don't want your web surfers to see.
To remove these links, login to your Google webmaster tools account and click on Links > Sitelinks in the navigation. Then you can block Sitelinks that you don't want for your website.
Unfortunately, you can only block Sitelinks with Google's tools, you cannot request that Google should show Sitelinks for your website.
