Google Releases Numrange Search
@@@@@@@@@

Google has just announced a new Refine Search feature named Numrange search. Just add two numbers, separated by two periods, with no spaces, to your search box query to refine the search for that numerical range

For example:

(1) inventions 1850..1899
(2) DVD player $250..350
(3) 5000..10000 kg truck

A pretty nifty feature.

Judy's Book Serves Local Results by Locals for Locals
@@@@@@@@@

Online yellow pages are great for finding nearby businesses, but nothing beats a recommendation from a local in making a decision to patronize a business.

Judy's Book is a site that's blending the ideas of local search and social networks, tapping into the knowledge and experience of residents of cities across the U.S. to provide a guide to local businesses and services. It's an interesting notion, and tools that allow you to see recommendations only from friends or specific groups makes it easy to get recommendations limited to people you trust.

Judy's Book has local recommendations from most medium-to-large size cities in the U.S. The site is free to browse; to add a post or ask a question you need to register, but registration is free.

The site was inspired by a "little green book" of trusted sources kept by "Judy," the mother of one of the Judy's Book founders. The book contained a list of the best service providers in the Seattle area.

.mobi TLD to Go Live
@@@@@@@@@

Back in December, ICANN announced preliminary approval of .mobi for mobile phones. Despite their being some concern that it goes against the principles of the Internet, namely that the web should be device agnostic. the new TLD will be going ahead.

Backed by Nokia, Vodafone and MS among others,  you'll be able to register .mobi domains in about 3 months or so

Picture-Perfect Pixsy Finder
@@@@@@@@@

Even with the Net's leading stock photo houses camped right here in the Northwest corner of the national viewfinder, it can sometimes be a trek of Lewis & Clark proportions to find pictures for special subjects in the Web's image archives. A new Seattle start-up by the name of Pixsy intends to fill in where other image searches now leave off. Pixsy finds photos you can't find anywhere else on the web.  Google, Yahoo!, and all the other major search portals use something called a "spider" to crawl the Web and index photos. Pixsy, however, accesses special databases of images thru XML feeds that cannot be crawled by spiders. These data troves include blogs, mobile blogs, social networks, and sites that generate large amounts of photo content.  The results are unique photo "finds" and a new method for discovering content on these emerging networks. Take your pix.

SEO Tip of the Week   Dynamic thinking about Dynamic Linking
@@@@@@@@@

Is it true that search engines do not like dynamic sites and will stay away from sites that have pages which are dynamically served?

Absolutely not. Dynamic sites are just fine, and, for the most part, are treated like any other site. There are a few issues that can create problems with dynamic sites being crawled, indexed, and ranked well in Search Engine Results Pages (SERPs).

They are:

- Cookies and Session IDs - you shouldn't require bots to accept cookies
- Lack of links to your dynamic pages (all pages must have links to them in order for them to rank well)
- Duplicate content - each page must be unique in order for it to remain in the index.
