AdWords Changes Focus on Flexibility, Keyword Quality
@@@@@@@@@

Advertisers will have more of a chance to bid for their top keywords, as Google said it will change AdWords in the coming weeks so bidding is based on quality -- each keyword will be assigned a Quality Score -- rather than treating all keywords the same and charging the same price.

Google's planned revamp of AdWords will give advertisers more control over the ads that run, and in some cases lower keyword bids,  Richard Holden, director of product management at Google, said Tuesday.

Advertisers will have more of a chance to bid for their top keywords, as Google said it will change AdWords in the coming weeks so bidding is based on quality -- each keyword will be assigned a Quality Score -- rather than treating all keywords the same and charging the same price.

"We used to disable keywords at a certain level," Holden said. "Now, if you're an advertiser and you feel this [keyword] will perform well, even if it's deemed with a lower Quality Score, you will be able to bid a higher amount and still run that word."

Google also will change keyword rates. Instead of a flat 5-cent minimum pay-per-click rate, the rate will vary based on the Quality Score.

Become.com Offers Comparison Shopping
@@@@@@@@@

Become.com, a shopping research site, has added integrated comparison shopping and several additional features designed to simplify and expedite your online shopping experience.

Become.com launched in April 2005 with an index of more than 3.2 billion pages of shopping related information from more than 40 million web sites. Unlike many other shopping search services that rely on feeds and sponsored listings, Become.com is uses crawler-based technology designed to focus exclusively on shopping related information, such as buying guides, reviews, forums, articles and so on.

Today, Become.com has integrated a product comparison service similar to those offered by other shopping search engines such as Shopping.com, Shopzilla and others.

The key difference between Become.com and most other shopping search services is the ability to research products using Become.com's web search index, gather useful information and then seamlessly switch to a comparison shopping tool. Most other shopping search services focus primarily on the comparison aspect of shopping, offering a limited set of reviews or other product information.

MSN Updates Start.com Site with New Features
@@@@@@@@@

This week, MSN's experimental Start.com customizable homepage received a few updates and bug fixes that you can read about on the Start.com blog.

The most noticeable change comes in the way search results are displayed. Start.com results pages now allow you to quickly move between web results, news results, and RSS results via tab links at the top of the page. RSS results come from feed directory that's powered by Moreover and also used at My MSN.. Also, Start.com now allows you to subscribe to feeds via a link next to each RSS result.

The Launch of Google Moon
@@@@@@@@@

It was 36 years ago today when Neil Armstrong and Buzz Aldrin landed on the moon while Michael Collins circled overhead. To celebrate the historic event Google has not only put up a special logo on all of their home pages but they're also releasing Google Moon.

That's right space fans, you're now able to use the same technology that you'll find at Google Maps and Google Earth to wander around the Moon.

In many cases you're unable to zoom-in very close. This is due to NASA providing Google with a limited data set. If you do zoom-in and imagery isn't available, Google Moon does get a bit cheesy.

Btw, the FAQ points out that on July 20, 2069, Google will be ready to integrate local listings into the Google Moon product. It will be interesting to watch and see if another search provider tries to launch a local search product for the moon before 2069.

I wonder if MSN Virtual "Moon" or Yahoo "Solar System" is in the works?

Is Zazzle the new Google?
@@@@@@@@@

Zazzle has built a library of 500,000 digital images, including more than 3,500 items of copyright material licensed from the Walt Disney Co.'s treasure trove of pop culture icons like Mickey Mouse and Goofy.

Here's how Zazzle works:

Customers pick an image to be printed on a piece of merchandise, then select a phrase from a menu. The order is supposed to be completed within 24 hours.

The company so far has been making mostly T-shirts and posters. Beginning today, Zazzle will sell customized postage stamps in a partnership with mailing-equipment maker Pitney Bowes.

A sheet of 20 first-class stamps will sell for $16.99, a 130 percent markup that matches the price Stamps.com charges for a similar sheet of personalized postage.

The U.S. Postal Service hopes the personal touch will become popular for commemorating special events like weddings and birthdays, giving more people a reason to use "snail mail" in an era of increasing electronic communication.

SEO Tip of the Week  Avoid Repeating Repetitious Repetitions
@@@@@@@@@

Excessive use of META keywords willcause a search engine to ignore or decrease the weight for that keyword. And if you use a single word as a keyword, and later repeat it in your keyword string, then you may also be penalized. The string "Web, Web Design, Web" would be considered spamming. Also, keywords like 'word, words, wording, worded' may cause indexing to fail. Things are definitely getting tough, and it is advised that you use extreme caution when creating your Meta Tags. If you are indexed by any engine, and remain indexed for a week, then you have probably passed their test.  We recommend a repeat limit of three times and not any more.

For best results, the following Web publishing techniques should be avoided:

o Overuse or repetition of keywords
o Use of keywords that do not relate to the content of the site
o Use of fast meta refresh
o Use of colored text on same-color background
o Duplication of pages with different URLs
o Use of different pages that bridge to the same URL
