CACHING THE LATEST RESULTS IN SEARCH MARKETING....

Google Merges Maps, Local
@@@@@@@@@

Google has announced the official launch of Google Local, merging the technologies behind Google Local and Google Maps. No longer in beta in the U.S. and Canada, users can visit http://local.google.com to find local search and mapping information in one place.

With the new integration, if you have a saved location in Google Local you will now see a map of that location when you start a search, rather than later in search results. You'll also be able to use the satellite imagery and hybrid map/satellite photo combination when viewing local search results.

"With today's launch of Google Local, users will be able to go to one
location to find all the local and mapping information they need," said
Marissa Mayer, director, Consumer Web Products, Google Inc. "Whether
it's directions to the nearest pharmacy or reviews of nearby dim sum
restaurants, we will continue to develop innovative technologies that
enrich our users' lives."

Yahoo! Site Explorer Revisited
@@@@@@@@@

First announced at the Search Engine Strategies conference last August where it debuted for 24 hours, Yahoo's Site Explorer toolkit has finally emerged as a multi-faceted search measurement "Swiss Army Knife" for Webmaster and Web marketer alike.

The new Site Explorer can be used to

    * Show all subpages within a URL indexed by Yahoo!
    * Show incoming liks to a URL
    * Submit missing URLs to Yahoo!
    * Export results in tab-separated form (TSV)
    * View either the live page or the cached version.

Search Engines Join Flat-Fee Network
@@@@@@@@@

More search engines are joining a flat-fee network for search advertising as an alternative to Google, Yahoo and other pay-per-click models.

Seventy engines are now members of the Independent Search Engine & Directory Network, formed three months ago by search engine ExactSeek Inc., part of the Jayde Online Network, Winnipeg, Manitoba. The members of the international network, including MetaWebSearch.com, Koogle.com and WorldGolfDirectory.com, can provide advertisers an alternative to the current pay-per-click models, according to the network's founder.

The network's model is a flat fee -- $12 per listing for three months or $36 per listing for a year -- and keyword buys are limited. The network restricts the sale of each keyword term at 30 buys, so most companies are listed in the first or second page of listings.

A single listing includes a keyword term, a title, a description and a URL. Companies that pick keywords that "no one else has picked" likely will always appear in the first page of listings. The only drawback is that, if it becomes wildly popular, the demand might outstrip supply [terms are limited to 30].

Group Plots Future of Mobile Search
@@@@@@@@@@@@@

The Mobile Marketing Association (MMA) has formed a Mobile Search Working Group to establish guidelines for search marketing on mobile devices.

With a goal of creating a mobile search "ecosystem" that works for consumers, advertisers and content providers, the group aims to develop common business models, operating procedures and technology interfaces. The idea is to help individual carriers bundle branded mobile search into their service packages, while also enabling the monetization of out-of-garden content.

In February, the MMA set up committees to create best practices and ROI metrics for the wireless industry. The organization expects to add additional chapters to its international roster early next year.

New API From Yahoo: Yahoo Shopping User Product Reviews
@@@@@@@@@

Web developers might be interested in learning that earlier today Yahoo released the Yahoo Shopping User Product Review API.

The User Product Review service allows you to display user reviews about a particular product on your Website. These reviews can be sorted in three ways: latest reviews, most recommended reviews or the highest rated reviews; either in ascending or descending order.

"The idea is to let folks use Web services calls to pull data from our comparison shopping database to republish on their Web sites or within software applications," said Jeffrey McManus, the head of Yahoo's development team. "The main product page containing documentation and other resources will be located at Yahoo! Shopping Web Services."

SEO Tip of the Week:  Search Engine Math
@@@@@@@@@

if you find Boolean operators [AND or NOT] too intimidating, there is an easier way. This is called simplified search syntax, pseudo-Boolean searching, implied Boolean or "search engine math".

It goes like this:

+pizza +pepperoni +ham -olives -garlic.

Put a plus sign in front of words that must be present on the webpage. A minus sign in front of a word will tell the search engine to subtract pages that contain that particular word. Hence + equals the Boolean search term AND, and - the term AND NOT.

Note that there must not be any space between the relevant sign and the word! Write +"Star Wars", not + " Star Wars ".
