Google Searches Expand Nearly Five-Fold; Baidu Beats Microsoft
+++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++
comScore has released new figures looking at the most popular search engines worldwide. Google tops the list, with nearly five times as many searches as nearest competitor Yahoo. But the worldwide list also focuses attention on some non-US based search players like Baidu and NHN, which owns Korea's Naver. On a global basis, Asia-Pacific shines as the region with the most searchers and search activity.
Here's the list, with figures rounded, showing the number of searches that occurred in August 2007 on each search network:
1. Google Sites: 37.1 billion (5 billion at YouTube)
2. Yahoo Sites: 8.5 billion
3. Baidu.com: 3.3 billion
4. Microsoft Sites: 2.2 billion
5. NHN Corporation: 2.0 billion
6. eBay:1.3 billion
7. Time Warner Network [AOL]: 1.2 billion
8. Ask Network: 743 million
9. Fox Interactive Media: 683 million
10. Lycos, Inc: 441 million
Why is eBay included? It makes the list as being one of 50 worldwide properties where "search activity" is observed. Of Google's 37.1 billion searches, 5 billion came from eBay.
Also interesting is that Microsoft is playing catch-up not just against Google but also Yahoo and Chinese search powerhouse Baidu.
Worldwide, 61 billion searches occurred in the month. Here's the breakdown by region:
Region....Unique Searchers.....Searches......Searches Per Searcher
Asia-Pacific 258 million 20.3 billion 78.7
Europe 210 million 17.8 billion 85.1
North America 206 million 16 billion 77.4
Latin America 50 million 4.8 billion 95.7
Middle East - Africa 31 million 2.1 billion 69.8
Worldwide 754 million 61 billion 80.

MySpace Platform To Launch Next Week
++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++
MySpace is gearing up to launch MySpace Platform, according to a number of third party developers who’Äôve been contacted for input on the product. While this has been rumored since June, this is the first indication that the service is preparing to actually launch. The moment of truth will be next week at the Web 2.0 Conference in San Francisco.
The new developer platform, like Facebook Platform which was announced in May, will essentially be a set of APIs and a new markup language that will allow third party developers to create applications that run within MySpace. Developers will be able to include Flash applets, iFrame elements and Javascript snippets in their applications, and access most of the core MySpace resources (profile information, friend list, activity history, etc.). Applications will need to be hosted on MySpace servers.

++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++
Yes, it’Äôs been another banner week for Google. Not only did their stock break the $600 a share barrier, they announced the acquisition of Jaiku.
Jaiku is the Finnish version of Twitter, the stream of consciousness, "here's-what-I'm-doing-now" micro-blog. It’Äôs a ’Äúlife streaming’Äù application that boasts unique features like threaded conversations, easy group formation and a strong mobile platform.
A lot of people are asking why Google didn’Äôt buy Twitter. Jaiku appears to be the smarter buy. The user interface is better, the features are more sophisticated and Jaiku is doing a better job integrating mobile. Everything Google wants to improve on.

LiveDeal Blending Local Search and Video
+++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++
Local search and classifieds site LiveDeal will integrate video content in its listings. Individual sellers and businesses can now upload videos to enhance their classifieds or directory listings.
The move follows closely behind many local search and internet yellow pages sites that have blended local search and video over the past year, such as Yellowpages.com, Superpages, and Citysearch. Every major U.S. IYP now has video capability in some form, as there is a clear trend towards video integration in local search.
Meanwhile, Google's video addition to AdSense expands its own video efforts by scaling the distribution of YouTube videos to the expansive AdSense publisher network. This has strong local implications as well, with the speculation that Google could integrate video into the AdWords platform by letting users and businesses upload video that is then placed with contextual and geographic targeting throughout AdSense and local search results (i.e. Google Maps).

Blocked Domains Coming to YSM
+++++++++++++++++++++++++++++
Reggie Davis, the man in charge of click quality at Yahoo, posts an update, including the news that advertisers will be able to block unwanted domains from Yahoo's partner network. This mirrors a feature Google currently has in place.
"Blocked Domains, allows you to specify certain sites in our partner distribution network on which you do not want your ads to appear.
As an aside, it's worth noting that Yahoo is now offering more proactive refunds based on poor quality partner traffic. Some of my clients saw some solid ones for August, bringing ROI into line where it should have been.
Yahoo is clearly coming around to the view that if you get ahead of these issues, you make more money and create less hassle in the long run. It's all about accountability breeding confidence in the channel.

Zoho DB Beats Google, Microsoft to First Online Database
+++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++
Web Office suite vendor Zoho has one-upped the software industry's biggest players with the launch of an online database and reports app called Zoho DB. Zoho DB can:
* Convert spreadsheets into online databases (with CSV and TSV imports)
* Create reports, charts and pivot tables with drag-n-drop functionality
* Provide Pivot Table Support
* Allow you to run SQL (select) Queries on the data. You can run any select query in any SQL format (they support Oracle, SQL Server, DB2, Sybase, MySQL, PostgreSQL, Informix and ANSI SQL dialects).
