Browser Wars: Last week's IE 7.0 vs. This Week's Firefox 2.0
+++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++
Now that Internet Explorer 7 has been released, the world is making note of its position in the Net search hierarchy, starting with the fact that the browser has a visible search box built into the "chrome."
It's uncertain whether the "chrome" window is going to make that much of a difference in users' search behavior, but we'll know in short order. IE7 is being rolled out in a mandatory fashion to Windows users beginning November 1 through the Windows update system. If Microsoft’Äôs search share rises, the chrome search box may be working.
On a new installation, where Google has no presence or partnership, Microsoft Live Search will become the default. Curiously, it's called Live Search which may be less familiar to some users. However, if a user selects Google or Yahoo! as the search engine default, Microsoft respects their wishes.
Across the Web, the free, 5-megabyte Firefrox browser, now available in 39 languages for Windows, Mac and Linux computers, is now available for download from getfirefox.com.
The new release incorporates anti-phishing technology to prevent the deceptive disclosure of personal information. It restores windows, tabs, in-progress downloads and text typed into online forms if any of those are interrupted by a system crash. And it corrects the spelling of words entered on Web pages.
Version 2.0 also improves on the tabbed-windows interface that Mozilla innovated and that Microsoft introduced for the first time with IE7.
Firefox’Äôs share of the browser market has grown to 9.8 percent of the U.S. market this month, from 2.9 percent in October 2004.

A Google Custom Search Engine -- Yours for the Building
+++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++
It was only a matter of time. Google has played catchup with Rollyo, Yahoo, Squidoo and a select group of other search customizers with a "Build Your Own Custom Search Engine" service, now up and running.
Built on top of Google Co-Op, customizing your own search engine is fairly straightforward. Simply specify the sites you want to include in searches. Place a search box and search results on your website. Customize the look and feel to match your website. Invite your community to contribute to the search engine. You're there!
Once you've got your search engine up and running you can make use of the Google Marker, which sits on your browser bar. When you find another site that you want to add to your system, just click on the link and add either the page or the site to the collection you're creating. Google has put a lot of thought into this one.
Looking to scope out what others have done? Check out the new Guide to Custom Search Engines (CSEs) at the link below. If you like what you see you can copy the HTML code of their custom search engine right onto your site.

More on Google Website Optimizer
++++++++++++++++++++++++++++
The new Google Website Optimizer gives advertisers the power to improve the content on the pages within their websites in order to generate more conversions with the same or less advertising spend.
Specifically, Google's new multivarient landing page testing and optimization tool enables marketers to test different ideas for variations of headlines, promotional copy, or images and provides easy-to-read graphs showing which variations resonate best with their website visitors. Through the step-by-step interface, you can quickly and easily plug in the different versions of each page section you wish to test.
Google Website Optimizer automatically applies these versions to create every possible different combination of landing pages, and randomly displays each combination to your users as they come in from your Google AdWords campaign. You simply set up the experiment, plug in your variables, and read the comprehensive reports as the experiment progresses with each click.

Outside.in Flips Location Based Content
+++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++
Outside.in is a clever twist on a very important emerging market of location based content, Outside.in. Check it out. Founder Steven Johnson describes it this way:
...the site is ultimately about a new kind of experience. You sit at a computer and type in a street address, or a neighborhood name, or a zip code -- perhaps for your own home area, perhaps for a place you're visiting or interested in -- and within seconds the screen gives you a glimpse of all the textured, real-world issues and conversations and news unfolding in the location you've entered. Not just restaurant reviews or upcoming concerts, but the broad, bustling range of information flowing through a lively neighborhood: complaints about the local school; rumors of a new bar opening up next week; a crime report for a mugging the night before; a promising open house this weekend. Up to now, only the most connected local experts in any neighborhood could keep up with all these evolving conversations. outside.in is designed to let you see it all in seconds.

SEO Tip of the Week: The Truest Measure of Quality
+++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++
As dispassionate robots, search engines have their own evaluation signals. As they try to improve in quality, it's only natural for their algorithms (and the search scientists behind them) to try and factor in more human metrics in order to improve quality to the greatest possible degree. Computer Scientist Xan Porter has offered up a revealing structure for how humans might evaluate documents:
Intrinsic Features:
* How accurate is the information presented?
* How biased or unbiased is the data?
* How believable is the content?
* How credible is the source?
Contextual Features:
* Is the information relevant to the user's query?
* Does the information add value to the subject?
* Is the work recent enough to be of value?
* Is the source thorough in its presentation?
* What amount of information is provided?
Representational Features:
* Can the material be interpreted in different ways?
* How easy or difficult is the material for a user to understand?
* Does the document state the information concisely?
* Is the source consistent?
Accessibility Features:
* Is the document accessible?
* Does the content present security risks?
Which of these can search engines currently measure? Presently, there are only solid metrics for accessibility, security risks and, to a certain extent, readability... indeed, there is a long way to go.
