Google Makes Its Entry Into The Wireless World
++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++
Google has taken its long-awaited plunge into the wireless world, announcing that it is leading a broad industry alliance to transform mobile phones into powerful mobile computers that could accelerate the convergence of computing and communications.
Mobile phones based on Googleís software, code-named Android, are not expected to be available until the second half of next year. They will be manufactured by a variety of handset companies, including HTC, LG, Motorola and Samsung and be available in the United States through T-Mobile and Sprint.
The technology is expected to provide cellular handset manufacturers and wireless operators with capabilities that match and potentially surpass those using smartphone software made by Apple, Microsoft, Nokia, Palm, Research in Motion and others. In contrast to the existing competitors, Googleís software will be offered freely under ìopen sourceî licensing terms, meaning that handset manufacturers will be able to use it at no cost and be free to add new features to differentiate their products.

Facebook Unveils Social Ads
++++++++++++++++++++++++
This week, Facebook CEO Mark Zu ckerbergintroduced Facebook Ads, an ad system for businesses to target users with advertising and friend referral.
Facebook Ads launched in three parts: a way for businesses to build pages on Facebook to connect with their audiences; an ad system that facilitates the spread of brand messages virally through Facebook Social Ads and an interface to gather insights into peopleís activity on Facebook that marketers care about.
Just like a Facebook user, businesses can start with a blank canvas and add all the information and content they want, including photos, videos, music and Facebook Platform applications. Outside developers have created a range of applications to enhance Facebook Pages, such as booking reservations or providing reviews of restaurant pages, buying tickets on a movie page or creating a custom t-shirt. Companies launching applications for Pages include Fandango, iLike, Musictoday LLC, OpenTable, SeamlessWeb, Zagat Survey LLC and Zazzle.
Advertising messages will gain distribution through what Facebook has termed the ìsocial graph,î the network of real connections through which people communicate and share information. When people engage with a businessí Facebook Page, that action will spread information about that business through the social graph.
Users can become a fan of a business and can share information about that business with their friends and act as a trusted referral. Facebook users can interact directly with the business through its Facebook Page by adding reviews, writing on that businessí Wall, uploading photos and in any other ways that a business may want to enable. These actions could appear in usersí Mini-Feed and News Feed, Facebookís popular products that allow users to share information more efficiently with their friends.

AOL Looking to Buy Israeli Company Quigo
++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++
In an effort to keep up with competitors Microsoft, Google and Yahoo, it has been reported that AOL is looking to buy Israeli company Quigo.
AOL may potentially spend $300 million on the company. Quigo assists advertisers place contextual ads on sites, allowing AOL to deliver more relevant ads to its users.
Quigoís two major online advertising products are AdSonar, which is similar to Google AdSense, and FeedPoint, which places ads on online publishing sites or search results.
The company currently has $45 million of investments from Highland Capital, Steamboat Ventures and other investment firms. This signifies the companyís presence in the online ad race.

In a related story, AOL is set to announce plans to create a user-privacy database similar to the FTC's "do-not-call" list that protects people from unwanted telemarketing solicitations. Users would be able to decline to receive advertising that's based on their demographic and behavioral information.

Goodbye Blue Dot, hello Faves.com
++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++
Seattle social networking startup Blue Dot is scrapping its name and repositioning the service -- now dubbed Faves.com.
Users of the new site can create a personalized Web page populated with their favorite news topics. For example, a Seattle Mariners' fan who also enjoys surfing and cooking could sign up to receive information about those specific topics from other users who have bookmarked related content. That puts Faves.com in direct competition with sites such as Topix.net, Digg and Stumble Upon. The concept also is similar to what Seattle's SportsUltra is trying with its customized sports news service.

Moving Site to a New IP: How to Prepare
+++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++
Moving your site to a new IP or host? In a nutshell, here's what is necessary before you proceed:
1. Move the content of the site, including scrips and databases to the new server.
2. Once the new server is running, update the DNS's A-record to point to the new server.
3. Wait about a week to make sure search engines know the new IP.
4. Cancel hosting on the old server
You do not have to create any 301 redirects at all, just update the DNS records and the users (and search engines) will automatically get the new IP and access the server there.
Note that this procedure is drastically different than moving a site to a brand new server platform, or deploying a site upgrade or redesign on a new server. In those cases, you must redirect from page to page to preserve PageRank and prevent former linkers and users from getting lost.

17 Search Engine Reputation Management Optimization Tips
+++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++
When it comes to engendering positive online visibility for a personal or corporate name, Google, Yahoo and MSN have become reputation management engines just as much as they are search engines. Here is a quick list of 17 different ways to optimize for positive visibility for your good name, be it corporate or personal (Thanks to Rob Garner for this entry.):
1) Add your profile to LinkedIn, and build a real page with real connections.
2) Create a site with your exact keyword or name domain, and add useful content.
3) Use paid search to enhance your site visibility.
4) Take inventory of all of your existing sites. Determine if they are properly optimized for your target brand or name keyword set. If not, start filling in the gaps with optimized pages, and optimized title and meta elements.
5) Use various optimized digital assets ó particularly video. Video and image results can attract eyeballs away from everything else on the page. Make it useful, funny, or otherwise unique and entertaining.
6) Write meaningful content and establish yourself or your company as an expert, either for your own site, or for other blogs. Good content naturally finds itself at the top of the search results, and its creators are often rewarded with link citations, writer profile pages and high rankings as a result.
7) Link strategically. I donít want to sell this one short, as it is one of the most important elements, but leverage your on-theme sites and link to other relevant sites to help push them up higher in the results.
8) Leverage your good domain for search benefits by creating a subdomain for your target term. Add valuable and useful content. Corporate sites should seriously consider architecting around subdomains, as they are treated as separate domains by the engines.
9) Create a profile on various social media sites like MySpace and Flickr. Also note that content entered into Flickr is entered into a Creative Commons license.
10) Start a blog on WordPress. Plan on investing time and making it a real blog.
11) Start a WordPress blog on your own domain.
12) Avoid putting out any material that you wouldnít want in your primary namespace. An ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure.
13) Create a Naymz profile.
14) Send out a press release, or two. Or twenty (over time, of course).
15) Have someone interview you about your passion. Publish the interview on your site.
16) Create a search roll at Rollyo of search engines and topics you really like.
17) Be very, very patient.

SEO Tip of the Week: Making Your About Us Page More About Them - Your Customers
++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++
Stoney deGeyter contributes these tips about letting the About Us page of your site play a functional role in providing visitors comfort and assurances about your company and your ability to meet your customers' needs.
Company description
Information on the company such as when it was founded, primary owners/managers, and product/service offerings should be provided. A complete company history is not necessary, but an overview of the important aspects should be included.
Team Biographies
Brief biographies of appropriate personal should be provided along with a quality photograph of each. If the biographies are too long for this page you can easily provide links to more details on each individual. This information helps visitors feel as if they are getting to know you and allows them to achieve a level of comfort with who you are.
Mission statement
About Us page should include additional company information such as mission statement, company philosophies, beliefs, and vision for the future. These are reassurances that let visitors know what you stand for and your long-term goals.
Content timeliness
Content on About Us page must be kept current and up-to-date. Be sure that outdated or irrelevant information be removed immediately to avoid the appearance of a "stale" website.
Additional links
Page should provide additional links to other relevant portions of the site such as contact page, investor relations, company news, registration information, job opportunities, etc. Getting all the right pieces of your About Us page in place can improve its effectiveness dramatically. Not only will you provide your visitors a positive impression of your company and team, but you will have provided them subtle reassurances that may just help them choose you over a competitor.
