Big Three Search Engines Targets of Cyber Monday Malware Attack
++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++

According to a security research firm report issued on Tuesday and since confirmed, Google, Yahoo, and Microsoft Live Search were targeted early this week with a large-scale, organized attack campaign designed to steer online searchers towards malicious malware websites.

The attack was reportedly generated by a network of spambots which have been adding links into blog comments and forums pointing to the bad sites over a period of months in some cases. The pages either contained iframes which attempted to load malware onto visitors machines or began redirecting to the sites containing malware at some point after achieving rankings. Sites appear to be .CN domains (not really .CN TLDs but masked as such). 27 different domains were reported, each containing up to 1,499 bad pages or 40,000 potential malware traps.

It is not seen as a coincidence that the attack was timed to occur on the first weekend of the holiday shopping season and Cyber Monday when more people are thought to be conducting keyword searches than any other time of year. There's no evidence that the criminals bought Google search keywords, however, nor that they've compromised legitimate sites. Instead, they've gamed Google's ranking system and registered their own sites.

Verizon Joins Google In Opening Up Wireless Platform
+++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++

In a major break with industry practice, Verizon Wireless has announced this week it will allow consumers to use any compatible cellphone on its network and allow open access to the Web and third-party applications.

Google is spearheading a similar move with an open-standards software platform -- dubbed Android -- and already counts Sprint Nextel Corp. and Deutsche Telekom AG's T-Mobile USA as allies.

Under Verizon's new policy, consumers will be able to go to virtually any electronics store and buy cellphones and other mobile devices for use on Verizon's network as long as the devices meet the carrier's minimum standards. Right now, Verizon Wireless customers have to go to Verizon's retail stores or those of its partners and choose from whatever phones are offered by the carrier. Consumers switching from one cellphone service to another usually have to give up their old phone and get a new one.

Verizon said it will publish technical standards early next year for the development community so that software, applications and devices can run on its network. The company said it will also make sure the new devices and features have no bugs that could affect other Verizon customers. It has put $20 million into its labs to support the new program.

Gadgets and Widgets Unite
+++++++++++++++++++++++

Wondering what to give your Website for Christmas? Think Google Gadget or Apple Widget - something functional that will let your customers, fans and friends place a reminder of your brand's eternal goodness on their iGoogle, MyYahoo or Windows Live personal pages. Thinking outside the browser box, your new, Web-branded remote control device can even reside right on your user's desktops.

A Google Gadget can now also run as an Apple Dashboard Widget. So now you can have the same Google Gadget on your iGoogle page and Google Desktop Sidebar as well as in your Apple Dashboard. From a developer's standpoint, a Google Gadget will work easily on a Mac, without any extra code.

Yahoo and Adobe to Offer Contextual Advertising In PDFs; Yes, PDFs!
+++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++

Yahoo and Adobe have teamed up to give publishers the ability to offer contextual advertising as part of their PDF document downloads.

In a beta launch, users can upload their PDFs to Yahooís ad network where Yahoo hosts the document for download and serves up contextual advertising in a panel to the right of the given documentís content.

According to CNET, sites participating in the current closed beta include IDGís InfoWorld, Wired, Pearsonís Education, Meredith Corporation and Reed Elsevier. No word as yet as to when it might be broadly available, although if it is eventually rolled out as part of the Yahoo Publisher Network (YPN) it will be a US residents only service.

On one hand contextual advertising in PDFs probably falls into the ìwhy didnít they think of that before.î It will be interesting to see however whether the ads convert, and it may provide an additional revenue stream for ebook sellers and similar online users and creators who regularly provide PDF downloads to visitors.

What to Do With An Extra Domain Name: Open an Amazon aStore (Plus Askville!)
+++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++

Online Revenue News relates an interesting case study on why now is a great time to convert a popular, parked domain name into a retail business with an Amazon aStore.

The aStore model allows you to setup a site with any number of products or categories of products from Amazon;s inventory. There's lots of room to add a creative touch with customization including colors, links, and sections that are displayed.

You can create an aStore in as little as 5-10 minutes. In this case, the stores are:

* GPSOnline.net - A GPS Superstore
* WCWineCellars.com - Wine Cellars & Wine Accessories
* MamasGiftBaskets.com - A Great Selection of Gift Baskets Online

It would be interesting if Amazon allowed the actual domain name instead of having to 301 redirect the name or implement them in a frame.

Speaking of Amazon, the world's largest Web retailer launched Askville.com, an information-sharing Web site where users can ask questions and answer queries from others, today.

The site, open to all of its customers, has been in beta testing since December 2006 and has already been open to a few users, Amazon said. Similar services are offered by Yahoo Inc's Answers and other Web sites such as AnswerBank. Google Inc also had an "Answers" section, which has been discontinued.

SEO Tip of the Week: Press Release SEO Tips
+++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++

Ranking well on the Web's most popular online news sites like MSNBC, AOL News or CNN is one thing, but press release authors across the Web are finding that the inbound links from Google News and Yahoo News as well the media outlets of PR Newswire, Business Newswire, MarketWire and PRWeb also gain immediate traction and produce links straight back to a site's major content pages and online media center. Simply by optimizing and distributing a press release, online marketers can realize attractive benefits at a nominal cost. Here are a few choice Press Release SEO Tips from the managers of today's leading wire services.

PR Newswire, Vice President, Distribution Services, Sarah Skerik

"Write a pithy (80 character or less,) descriptive headline that includes important keywords. Donít be coy with this important real estate. Utilizing important keywords in the headline, and then again in the lead (and throughout your message) reinforces the relevance of your message for those important terms."

PRWeb, Interactive Marketing Manager, Joe Beaulaurier

"Link your strategically important search keywords to deep relevant pages in your site, not the front page. Use your keyword links to connect the strategically important keyword terms in your press releases to the most relevant deep pages within your site. If they donít exist, create appropriate deep pages (aka landing pages) and place content on them that is specifically relevant to the keywords. For instance, if you are selling bicycles and are linking the words ìmountain bikesî from within your press release, be sure to link to the page that details your companyís mountain bike offerings."

Business Wire, Senior Vice President, Media Services & Product Strategy, Laura Sturaitis
"
Think of creating a press release as compiling a mini web page on the news or topic being written about. You use formatting like bold, italics, bullet points, short headlines and subheads that not only makes the page easier to read online, but also enhances SEO. You insert a company logo for branding and embed photos, graphics and video links in your press release to show what you are writing about in pictures, graphs, sound & motion, rather than simply trying to describe it in wordsÖvery web friendly. You incorporate links from your targeted keywords in the press release, not only to have your release rank for those keywords in the search engines, but also so your press release can operate as a portal to additional information on those topics, driving traffic to your website and hopefully to landing pages utilizing the same keywords."

Marketwire, Product Manager, Social and Multimedia Products, Kevin Dill
"
Add an audio link such as a podcast or product announcement into your press release. If you have an RSS feed associated with your releases, you can direct Apple iTunes to pick up the audio automatically and include it in a freely available channel on iTunes.com. With 70 million iTunes subscribers, why not? There are also several audio aggregators on the web which spider audio links and make them keyword searchable.

Consider choosing a newswire which will allow ìexternalî multimedia content hosting. For example, YouTube for video or Flickr for photos. These sites are spidered by the major search engines as well as being searchable ìsocialî directories within the site. YouTube is the third largest search engine. Now you have created a press release which is truly ìoptimizedî. You have taken your multimedia elements and integrated them into large compartmentalized sites for expanded availability. You will get additional search engine pickup of your content external to normal press release distribution channels as well as additional presence in popular searchable portals."
