Microsoft, Google and Yahoo! Unite to Support Sitemaps
+++++++++++++++++++++++++ +++++++++++++++++++++

In alphabetical order, Google, Microsoft and Yahoo! have come together in support of a common SiteMaps protocol for bulk submission of Web site pages. The goal of this united effort among the three majors is to standardize on a common search submission and indexing protocol that will improve coverage and results for publishers and searchers alike. The Sitemaps protocol enables site owners to inform search engines about the content of their Website(s) directly instead of having to rely solely on a spider's Webcrawling algorithms to find it.

Other search engines are also invited to use the system ó and it has specifically been placed as open property through Creative Commons. However, IACís Ask.com was not a part of the announcement.

Sitemaps.org is the official website. <http://www.sitemaps.org>

Google at $500 per Share. Enter AGLOCO
+++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++

Last week's news that a single share of Google stock had surpassed $500 sounded a clarion call to many. Google-economics, or the power of online user click-through activity to drive advertising across the Web, is transforming our economy. Enter a new start-up called AGLOCO.

AGLOCO is a start-up company that wants to redistribute the economic value of Internet advertising with all of its members. It's easy (and free) to join -- and to use: you simply browse the Web the way you always do.

AGLOCO works in the background to collect dividends from advertisers for your regular Web browsing activity. There's no spying or privacy issues. No complications. Just Google economics made simple.

One feature I really like is that AGOLCO rewards the early people who help build out the network (and you and I are among the very first as the concept is only a few days old). Click on this link to go directly to AGLOCO (with our SearchWrite SearchNews member id#), and we will get credit if you sign up. http://www.agloco.com/r/BBBB3943 . Then YOU will get credit for referring your friends and colleagues.

Google-economics is transforming the Internet -- let's hope this new concept is a way that users like all of us can share in the value creation.

PageBull Search A ViewFinder
+++++++++++++++++++++++++

If a picture is worth a thousand words, a screen shot may be worth a thousand clicks. Or perhaps the truest measure of a home page screen shot is that users won't overlook it as the first best search result. PageBull is a visual search engine that's all about the image. Instead of traditional, text-based results, the PageBull SERP returns large screenshots of the pages arranged on a grid.

What's more, the search terms are highlighted inside of the screenshots. Someday all search engines will likely behave this way. The "eyes" will have it!

Search Engine Land Launches December 11
++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++

Yet another changing of the guard will occur next month at the granddaddy of Search Engine News. Say goodbye to the Search Engine Watch blog -- and say hello to Search Engine Land. Search Engine Watch isn't ending operation, but its authoritative editorial staff is exiting in droves. Search Engine Land is the heir apparent -- a new search news blog launching December 11, 2006 from the search pioneer and the original creator of Search Engine Watch, Danny Sullivan, as editor-in-chief. Danny has recruited fellow senior editors Chris Sherman and Barry Schwartz to join him. At launch, the site will provide original content covering developments in the search space, daily blog posts covering search news from across the web, a daily email newsletter recapping search news from Search Engine Land and across the web, and a monthly email newsletter recapping search news over the past month. The Website will also available by feed.

Closures & Casualties: Google Answers & Microsoft bCentral Regs
+++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++

Google is shutting down its Google Answers service. While Yahoo Answers has been on a steady growth curve for many months, Google traffic has been static. Killing off the service, will help Google focus its efforts toward more needed areas. But it still feels like an odd, almost surrendering move in the face of Yahoo Answers unequivocal success. Google has announced that new questions won't be accepted after the New Year, though the site will continue to let people view the question archives.

In other "closings," the popular Microsoft bCentral directory has announced they will close their doors to new business. As of November 15, 2006 Microsoft will no longer accept new sign-ups for select Microsoft Online Small Business Services. This means that those who were in the directory before, will continue to be there and be allowed to renew but no newcomers. We see the end of new registrations as a sign of channel conflict between the PPC Live Search adCenter and a lower-cost subscription service. Microsoft continues to stay focused on revenues.

How Not To Get Your URL Banned From Digg
+++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++

A lot of bloggers feel that the key to increasing their traffic is to get on the Digg front page as often as they can. Most of these bloggers do so by scooping news, writing how to guides or even top 10 lists, but most don't realize that you have to be careful or else your URL will get banned from Digg.

When submitted stories are consistently reported as spam and users complain via our feedback email about submission spam, we ban the domain. The domain will not be unbanned. The domain would consistently get reported as spam otherwise. Please review our FAQ (digg.com/faq) for more information.

Here are some of the things that the Digg community considers spam:

* Old news
* Repeated stories that keep on getting submitted, such as "iPod Spoof Commercials".
* Stories that provide basic information such as "How To Increase Your Blog Traffic". Although many of these types of stories hit the Digg front page, a lot of diggers hate them and are making noise about them by marking them as spam, or even emailing the Digg staff.
* Stories submitted by website owners.

Before you or your friends start submitting your own stories to Digg, be careful and put the Digg community ahead of yourself. It does not matter if you are writing spam or writing good content, if the Digg community feels that you are spamming, your URL will be banned.

SEO Tip of the Week: Meta Desccription Tag Revisited
+++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++

There has always been confusion on if Google uses the meta tag data. Some say Google uses the meta description tag, some say they don't. Most say, Google doesn't use the meta keywords tag. In any event, Google's Vanessa Fox said that you should use the meta description tag.

Breaking the silence, Google's Webmaster Central chief, Vanessa Fox, responded to a perceived indexing issue as follows:

Looking at your site in the search results, it appears that your pages would be well served by meta description tags. For most queries, the generated snippet is based on where the query terms are found on the page, and in those cases, your results are fine. But for some more generic queries, where a logical snippet isn't found in the text, the generated snippet seems to be coming from the first bits of text from the page -- in this case, boilerplate navigation that is the same for every page.

In summary, by adding a meta description tag, a unique one, for each page, Google will use that information as extra criteria to determine the uniqueness of the page. Otherwise, Google will use the top text of your page's content, which can potentially be your top navigation or worse. This comes in handy for conducting site: command searches with no keyword specific data given after the site command.
