Is MySpace Really Larger than Yahoo?
++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++

Speaking of Yahoo, the company is getting good at being No. 2. News Corp.'s Fox Interactive Media has now edged the search giant out of its long-held perch at the top position for Internet page views.

According to Hitwise, the session time at MySpace also leads:

Myspace Avg Sess Time 30:22
Yahoo! 360 Avg Sess Time 11:42

Kids spend hours on MySpace, looking at each other’Äôs profiles and pictures and spending a lot of time IM’Äôing So a scenario where there are less visitors but more page views is not hard to understand

StumbleUpon Launches StumbleVideo
+++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++

StumbleUpon has launched StumbleVideo, a web site that allows visitors to ’Äúsurf’Äù video content from MySpace, Google Video and YouTube, using the same random selection technology used by the popular toolbar.

For those of you not familiar with StumbleUpon, it's a fast growing community founded in 2001, with 1.6 million people "Stumbling" onto community-selected cool or humorous sites roughly 4 million times each day. When joining, users select topics of interest and are then asked to rate web sites presented to them, with a "thumbs-up" or "thumbs-down". Users can also share their favorites, and view their friends’Äô content, as well as tag and submit new web pages.

With the launch of StumbleVideo, the company is betting that people will enjoy discovering new videos in the very same way, and spend even more time "channel surfing".

One new capability is the ability to drag a file onto your browser and automatically add it to Google Docs & Spreadsheets. Supported file types include; doc, rtf, odf, sxw, cls, ods, and csv.

Other features include custom buttons (Windows only), a "Send To" that sends web pages via email, text message (SMS), or blog, Google Bookmarks integration and Google Account Sign-in.

Visual Search On Tap for Eye-Opening 2007
++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++

Visual search technology is still in its infancy, but a number of new start-ups are pushing the possibilities forward -- the latest being Xcavator.

Riya's Like.com, launched this year, gave users a way of highlighting a shoe, or part of a shoe, and then looking for similar shoes within its database of retail itemsî and is helping with comparison shopping. Like operates in a controlled environment, allowing search within limited categories (bags, watches, shoes). Similarly, Swedish company, Polar Rose, just raised $5.1 million to help it launch its facial recognition search site, apparently due to be unveiled within the next couple of weeks.

Enter San Francisco's Xcavator, which attacks visual search differently and will launch next year. Compared to other players, Xcavator lets you drill down further into a picture to find similar features. It claims it is getting closer to what the human eye/brain does. For example, if you’Äôre looking for pictures with certain attributes, Xcavator lets you select only those attributes for a visual search.

Decipho Social Search Debuts
+++++++++++++++++++++++++

Decipho, a new search engine built upon categorization, voting, ranking and social media measurement, has launched today with some most interesting features, one of my favorites being its ’ÄúSocial Meter.’Äù Its base search index is powered by Ask.com and signed in users may build and rank their own categories.

A Social Meter at the bottom of the page allows you to select what percentage a websites user ranking for a specific category must be equal or greater than.

A final feature is the Claim a Website option. When you see an image next to a search result and a link below it called Owners Message, this means the website owner has written there own description about their site for you to read. To claim your website you need to sign up for an account and while signed in, click on the Claim a Website tab and follow the directions from there

How Inventive! Google Launches Google Patents
+++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++
+

Google has rolled out a new Google Patents search engine, allowing people to search across the full-text of US patents from 1790 through the middle of 2006. The company plans to update the service further with more 2006 filings and move to a weekly or better refresh schedule in the future.

While US patents can already be searched by the general public using, among other resources, the search service provided by the US Patent & Trademark Office, Google has used the scanning technology used for Google Book Search to create a full-text index of all US patents through the middle of 2006. The USPTO also offers full-text searching, but only for patents going back to 1976. Before that date, you have to locate patents using relatively limited meta data (author, abstract, issue date, etc.). In contrast, the Google product should mean that you can quickly search across the entire text of the patents -- including meta data fields -- to find matches.

SEO Tip of the Week: How to get on the Netscape/digg homepage
-- EVERY SINGLE DAY!
+++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++

The unabashedly outspoken Web 2.0 networker, Jason Calacanis, writes about wending your way to the coveted homepage of digg and the necessary rites of passage to get there.

Calacanis writes: "As we all know I'm no longer working on Netscape. So, these are my observations as someone who is no longer affiliated with the service. I've figured out exactly how you can get almost any quality story on the home page instantly..."

For Netscape

1. Step One: Add the top 20-30 users on the service as friends. (Approximate time: 10 minutes). The top users are located on the home page on the bottom right.
2. Step Two: Add the Netscape sidebar on Firefox so you can follow your new friends (Approximate Time: 2 minutes)
3. Step Three: Vote for the stories of the top 30 users and place intelligent/fun comments on their stories (Approximate time: 30 minutes).
4. Step Four: Find a good story and submit it. Tip, try to avoid politics and news channels since they are the most crowded. (Approximate time: 5 minutes).
5. Step Five: Sitemail your friends the url of the story and say "check this one out!" (Approximate time: 1 minute). NOTE: Do not spam your "friends" list with sitemail or they will block you. I think maybe once or twice a month is fine. Once or twice a week might get annoying. Really depends on how your friends view you and what they think of the stories you submit. If they are good users they probably have the sidebar and are watching your activity already.

Total time: About an hour.
